The Performing Arts Fund NL has decided to discontinue the New Makers Grant. As a result, no new applications can be submitted from 2027 onwards. Makers who are currently participating in an ongoing trajectory can continue their development process as planned.
Since its introduction in 2013, the New Makers Grant has played an important role in supporting new generations of performing artists. At a time when opportunities for talent development were relatively limited, the scheme provided artists with the space to develop both artistically and professionally, in collaboration with organizations across the sector.
Since then, the cultural landscape has evolved. In recent years, the range of development opportunities available to artists has grown significantly. Development institutions within the national cultural infrastructure, as well as venues, festivals, and producing organizations, now play a much larger role in nurturing and supporting emerging talent.
It recently became apparent that the grant scheme would require legal revisions. As the Fund had already decided not to continue the New Makers Grant Scheme beyond 2029, it has now decided not to develop a revised version of the scheme.
Over the years, the New Makers Grant has made a significant contribution to the development of artists. At the same time, we have carefully considered how to deploy our available resources, capacity, and expertise as effectively as possible to support artists, both now and in the future. At a time when many challenges require the Fund’s attention, we have chosen to focus our resources and capacity on other schemes and initiatives that can support a broader group of artists.
We will continue to engage with the sector on how artists can best be supported at different stages of their careers. This will take place through initiatives such as Fund on Tour and as part of the preparations for the policy period starting in 2029. The lessons learned and experiences gained from thirteen years of the New Makers Grant Scheme will inform these discussions.
For artists who are currently participating in a New Makers trajectory, nothing will change. Ongoing trajectories can continue and be completed as planned.
