The Art of Impact - kick-off

01 December 2014
At the initiative of the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (Dutch acronym: OCW), today sees the kick-off of ‘The Art of Impact’. This programme researches and stimulates art projects, both existing and new, which have a clear social impact. How can art make a difference to a liveable neighbourhood and city, to energy and climate, to care, well-being, life sciences and a circular economy? The Ministry of OCW has made € 7 million euros available for this project for the next two years.
Minister Bussemaker presented this new programme during Cultuur in Beeld (‘Culture in the Picture’). “Art, culture and society need each other. Not only because it inspires us and enhances our identity. But also because artists often specifically devote their work to making the world a better, prettier, cleaner and more liveable place.”

The Art of Impact… focuses on initiatives that connect art and society. The goal is to strengthen the impact of existing projects and to reach a wider audience. Furthermore, it supports new initiatives that may contribute to the solution of contemporary social issues from a cultural angle.

The Art of Impact… calls upon artists, designers, mediators, cultural institutions and their customers from within as well as outside the cultural sector to submit plans that explore and strengthen the relationships between the arts and other social fields, and that make these relationships more visible. An open call for new projects will be made in early 2015.

The Art of Impact… is a collaboration between the Dutch Ministry of OCW and the six public cultural funds in the Netherlands: the Performing Arts Fund, the Cultural Participation Fund, the Dutch Film Fund, the Dutch Foundation for Literature, the Creative Industries Fund and the Mondriaan Fund. The programme is an extra incentive, in addition to the normal schemes operated by these funds.

Michiel Munneke is responsible for the programme. He worked for World Press Photo for twenty years, the last twelve years of which as Managing Director. Ryanne de Boer is involved in the programme on behalf of the Performing Arts Fund.
